The Namibian Navy ( English Namibian Navy ) are Namibia's armed forces at sea. They were formally founded in 2004, but have been administered as a separate unit since 1994 ( Namibian Defense Force Maritime Wing ). It is part of the Namibian Defense Force .

Details

In terms of personnel (around 700), the Navy is the smallest branch of the NDF. Only since the formal establishment in 2004 has value been placed on expanding the navy. The main task is to protect Namibian coastal waters from illegal fishing in the territory of the extended 24 nautical mile zone off Namibia. With the support of the Brazilian government, various ships have been purchased since 2001, including the patrol boat Brendan Simbwaye . The training of the Namibian naval forces took place until July 2016, also with the support of Brazil. Since then, the Navy has had its own training center in Walvis Bay.

Before 1994, the South African Navy had taken over the coast guard for the neighboring country.

Rear Admiral Sinsy Ndeshi Nghipandua ( Commander of the Navy of the Republic of Namibia ) has been in command of the Navy since September 29, 2017 , after his predecessor Rear Admiral Peter Vilho moved to the Ministry of Defense as State Secretary. The main location has been the naval port of Walvis Bay since 2000 .
