The Möwenstein is a boulder that was transported south from the Bornholm area by the glaciers of the Ice Age . It is located on the island of Ummanz in the west of Rügen in the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park . Boulders are relatively rare there, most of them are in the east of Rügen.

The stone is damaged by drill holes and consequential damage from frost blasting is to be feared.

The block of syenogranite hammer granite, which is legally protected as a natural monument, is registered with the State Office for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Geology as a geotope under the number G2 91. The stone is 5.7 meters long, 3.7 meters wide and 2.5 meters high. With a circumference of 15.0 meters, it has a volume of around 27 cubic meters.

Access

The Möwenstein is located in the bird sanctuary directly on the dike near Tankow and can be made out from the viewing platform for bird watching. Direct access is limited seasonally in accordance with nature conservation regulations.
