The Mühlenberg I tunnel was built in 1879 and is 155 m long. It belongs to the Leinefelde – Treysa railway line opened in 1880 , which was part of the so-called “ Kanonenbahn ” and has been closed since 1998.

It is located between Küllstedt and Effelder just before the former Effelder train station in a straight line with a gradient of 1: 105. The mean altitude is 350.5  m above sea level. NN . The tunnel is located at the foot of the slope of the Mühlenberg, which consists of severely torn, thin-plate limestones from the lower shell limestone . The unsustainable mountains are very rugged and interspersed with caves. It therefore had to be supported by vaults . When the vaults were renewed in the mid- 1930s , a larger stalactite cave was discovered, the unstable ceiling of which had to be secured by a special vault over the tunnel. The tunnel has an overlap of about 15 m. The terrain above the tunnel drops off steeply and consists of mixed forest. Fifty years ago, there were already several breaches in the terrain.

The tunnel is part of the railway line from Lengenfeld unterm Stein after Küllstedt that today with Handcars can be driven.
