Old mill in Unterlaa

The old mill in Unterlaa , also known as the Hofmühle , is an undershot mill next to the Liesingbach . It is located in Vienna's 10th  district of Favoriten , in the Unterlaa district at Unter-Laaer Straße 32. Directly across the street at Klederinger Straße 169 is the Prentlhof , with which the mill had no economic connection. This mill is a listed building .

history

The number of owners can be traced almost completely from 1436 to the present day, starting with the Knights of Malta (Johanniter) . In 1893, the mill is through probate come into the possession of the families Kronberger and Frank, in Oberlaa had a butcher shop and a bakery. The two couples bought the mill together with the water rights for the Liesingbach from the inheritance. In winter, ice production was carried out in two ponds next to the mill; the blocks of ice were stored in an ice house after being hacked out; the elevator for the transport was originally powered by the water power of the mill, since 1935 (electrification of Unterlaa) with an electric motor. There was a weighbridge next to the ice house to handle ice cream sales.

Because of the repeated violent flooding of the Liesingbach, the mill, the Mühlbach and the ice ponds were often damaged or even destroyed, so there were often major repairs. The mill operated with water power until 1935, and then electrically until 1957. The old Mühlbach was still used for ice cream production until 1937, traces of which can still be seen today. This mill stream - albeit without a water flow - is still present in its old course.

A Kronberger granddaughter, Magdalena Haspel, had owned the mill and the farm buildings since 1949, and now her children. This is why the mill has been in the family for around 120 years.

More mills on the Liesingbach

The Dachler mill in Rothneusiedl (today's address Liesingbachstraße 230) existed from 1732 to 1972. The owners, the Dachler family, also ran the Wiesmühle near Niederhollabrunn , the Teufelsmühle in Siebenhirten , the Lampelmühle in Vösendorf , the Hofmühle in Perchtoldsdorf and the mill in Leopoldsdorf.

The Oberlaaer Mühle, also called "Andersmühle" (today's address Hintere Liesingbachstraße 14-16), had existed since the Middle Ages, belonged to the Rothneusiedl manor in the 17th century and was operated until 1910. It was not located directly on the Liesing, but on the so-called Rothneusiedler Mühlbach.
