A rubbish sack or garbage bag , in Switzerland a rubbish sack or rubbish sack , is a sack for the transport or temporary storage of waste , which is disposed of with the contents (see waste disposal ). It is often used as an insert in waste bins so that it stays clean itself.

origin

The invention of garbage bags is traced back to the Canadians Harry Wasylyk , Larry Hansen and Frank Plomp, who are said to have invented the garbage bag in the 1950s. In Germany, it has been widespread since the 1970s at the latest.

description

In accordance with the dimensions of various forms of waste bin , the garbage bags are also widespread in various dimensions. A wide variety of materials can be used to manufacture garbage bags. Garbage bags made of paper , HDPE , LDPE and biodegradable film are common . Depending on the intended use, garbage bags are not only produced as classic flat bags, but also in other variants:

  • As a drawstring bag with a circumferential, welded-in plastic band at the upper end, on which the bag can be pulled together.
  • As a side-gusseted sack, a fold is inserted into the sides of the sack, so when the sack is filled, it has a slightly rectangular shape and a flat bottom. This means that the gusseted sack can be used better as a free-standing rubbish sack or in rectangular rubbish bins. In some cases, a plastic band is also inserted into the fold to tie the sack.
  • As a handle bag, the garbage bag is provided with handles at the top. With these the sack can be closed and carried.
  • As a single-loop handle bag that is suitable for attaching to different retaining projections. Due to the special shape with only one handle, the bag can also be filled when hung up.
  • As a wave top bag, here the garbage bag is provided with cutouts at the upper end of the bag, which allow the bag to be knotted together and thus closed.

Often, used plastic shopping bags are also used as garbage bags in households for a final use. However, depending on local regulations, these must be placed in full-fledged garbage bags or corresponding solid containers ( garbage cans ) for final disposal .

In Germany, size plays a role in the definition of garbage bags and garbage bags. Garbage bags are usually bags with a maximum capacity of 70 liters , garbage bags are usually bags with a capacity of 70 liters or more. In Switzerland, the kerichtacks are standardized (17, 35, 60 and 110 liters).

fees

Garbage fees may be charged for the costs of disposal . In most Swiss municipalities, a polluter-based sack fee is also required for each garbage bag , which can either be stuck to the approved standardized garbage bags (17, 35, 60 and 110 liters) as a municipal waste label or paid for with the fee bag that is only approved in the municipality . Almost each of the 2,396 Swiss municipalities or cities has its own collection and fee regulations for this.

Bag removal

In Hamburg , “ bag removal ” refers to a special form of disposing of municipal waste in pink or red garbage bags for those households where regular bin collection is not possible.
