The Göppingen waste-to-energy plant is a municipal and commercial waste-based waste-to - energy plant (MHKW) that is operated in combined heat and power . The plant produces approx. 63 GWh of electricity per year , plus approx. 55,000 MWh of thermal energy are extracted as district heating .
The plant was put into operation in 1975 and is now operated by EEW Energy from Waste Helmstedt GmbH in Helmstedt , Lower Saxony . In 1998 a new boiler and a modern flue gas cleaning system were installed in the plant.
Around 155,000 tons of residual waste from the Göppingen district and from Baden-Württemberg are thermally recycled here every year. Up to 600 tons of waste can be brought into the plant per day. The electrical energy produced from this is fed into the public grid. The power plant supplies around 17,000 households with electricity each year.
In addition, the system produces district heating, which is used to supply the Klinik am Eichert, the Bergfeld residential area with around 400 apartments and the neighboring area of the "Einsatz" police headquarters.
