MFK Fisher (actually: Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher , born July 3, 1908 in Albion , Michigan ; † June 22, 1991 in Glen Ellen , California ) was an American essayist who mainly dealt with topics related to culinary and table art .

Life

Fisher was in the tradition of Brillat-Savarin . Your translation of his major work, The Physiology of Taste , published in 1949 , made his work known in the USA and Canada.

At the beginning of the 1930s, Fisher lived in France for three years, and she was decisively influenced by the way of life and food. After returning to the United States, she began publishing essays on culinary arts. Her first book, Serve it Forth , was so radically different from those of other female authors before her that many critics assumed it was written by a man.

In the 1970s, Fisher lived in St. Helena, California , a town in the Napa Valley , surrounded by vineyards.

In her honor, Les Dames d'Escoffier International presents the MFK Fisher Award every two years , which honors women who have a significant influence on the further development of culinary art and dining culture.

In 1991, the year she died, she was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
