MI Sambou-Gassama

Alh. Muhammed Imam Sambou-Gassama (* 1947 in Lamin (according to another source in Bathurst ); † August 7, 2020 in Banjul ) was a Gambian linguist , diplomat , author and poet .

Life

Sambou-Gassama, the first son of Aja Fatou Njie Funneh and Almami Gassama from Bathurst, grew up in Lamin in Niumi , later he attended Islamic learning centers in Senegambia (region) and did his undergraduate studies at Omdurman University in Sudan . He then returned to Gambia in 1973 with a diploma in Islamic Studies .

He was initially an Arabic-Islamic teacher at Brufut and the Malfa school in Banjul in the 1970s . In 1976 he was sent to the Gambian embassy in Tripoli ( Libya ), which he and the Gambian diplomat Alh. Sheikh Amat Tijan Wadda ( Sheikh Ahmed Tijan Wadda ) opened. Sambou-Gassama and Ambassador Baba Drammeh were the first Arabists to enter the Gambian diplomatic service. From 1978 to 1980 he served as First Secretary of the Gambian High Commission in London , Great Britain , under High Commissioners BO Semega-Janneh and Abdoulie Bojang .

In 1981 he was sent by the Gambian Foreign Ministry to the office at the Organization for African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa . As he was considered an efficient translator and reviewer for Arabic, he joined the OAU. From 1981 to 2020 he worked at the OAU, today's African Union (AU), and headed the AU's Arab section for many years, as he was one of the longest-serving employees at AU headquarters. He was the leader of the Gambian community in Addis Ababa for many years and headed the AU staff union for many years. He was also an ambassador to Saudi Arabia .

In 2020 Sambou-Gassama was infected with the coronavirus and died after a short hospitalization in the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital .
