Economy and Infrastructure
In the past, the only mineral resources in Gambia were mined near Brufut, apart from the small gold deposits in the upper reaches of the Gambia . In the 1950s, ilmenite (FeTiO 3 ) (also titanium iron ), an ore from which the metal titanium is extracted, was mined here. After a few years, however, the mining was stopped again because the world market price had developed unfavorably.
On November 15, 2006, it was announced that the Australian Carnegie Corporation had signed a five-year contract to resume mining the ore on the coast. For this purpose, Carnegie Minerals Gambia was founded. Geologists suspect larger deposits near the places Bafuloto , Sanyang and Kartong . According to rumors, the dismantling had already started in July, before the conclusion of the contract.
