Baboucarr Semega-Janneh

Alh. Baboucarr Ousman Semega-Janneh (born July 21, 1910 in Bathurst , † June 21, 2002 in Dippa Kunda , Kanifing Municipal) was a Gambian cartographer , politician and diplomat.

Life

Semega-Janneh attended Methodist Boys' High School in Bathurst (now Banjul ). Then he studied from 1948 to 1949 at Ordnance Survey , the national British surveying authority, and at the Directorate of Overseas Surveys drawing and surveying ( English Draftsmanship and Land Surveys ). He then continued his local government studies in Great Britain in 1955 and Northern Ireland in 1956.

From 1931 he worked in the Gambia Surveys Dept and was its director until 1966 in 1954. From 1951 to 1967 he was a member of the Bathurst City Council and in 1959 its deputy chairman. In 1960 he was chairman of Bathurst City Council until 1965. In February 1965 he was elected Mayor of City of Bathurst. He was re-elected in 1966 and 1967.

From 1967 to 1971 he was appointed High Commissioner and was accredited as ambassador to Senegal . At the same time extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to Mauritania , Liberia , Guinea and Mali . In 1969 the accreditation was extended to Sierra Leone . From 1971 to November 1980 he became Ambassador to London , Great Britain. At the same time he was ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Austria , Belgium , France , Sweden , Switzerland and West Germany . From 1979 to 1980 also with the Holy See.

Memberships

Like his brother Howsoon O. Semega-Janneh , he was initially active in the Gambia Muslim Congress (GMC) in the 1950s , which he co-founded in 1952, and later joined the People's Progressive Party (PPP) in the 1960s . He founded the Bathurst Young Muslims Society (BYMS) in 1936 .

In 1955, Semega-Janneh was elected the first president of the Gambia Football Association .

Baboucarr Semega-Janneh was a member of the Gambia Oilseeds Marketing Board and the Advisory Committee on Contributing to the Constitution of the Gambia, and from 1969 to 1972 chaired the Advisory Committee on Budget and Finance, the Organization for African Unity .

Baboucarr Semega-Janneh was married and had four sons. Howsoon O. Semega-Janneh (1914–1988) was his younger brother and Satang Jow (* 1943) was his niece.
