MK Stalin

MK Stalin ( Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin ; Tamil : மு. க. ஸ்டாலின்; born March 1, 1953 in Chennai ) is an Indian politician of the regional party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). 2006–2011 he was Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration of the State of Tamil Nadu , and from 2009–2011 he was Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Stalin is the son and designated successor of DMK party leader M. Karunanidhi .

Life

MK Stalin was born on March 1, 1953 in Chennai (Madras). He is the son of the long-standing DMK leader and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi and his wife Dayaluammal. MK Stalin got its name after the Soviet dictator Josef Stalin .

At the age of 15, MK Stalin joined the DMK youth movement and was active in party work in his hometown Gopalapuram . During the national state of emergency announced by Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, MK Stalin was imprisoned for almost a year from 1976 to 1977 under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act . In 1984 MK Stalin ran for the first time in the Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai in the elections to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (the state parliament), but was defeated by the AIADMK candidate . In 1989 he ran again and was elected to parliament for the first time. In the early elections in 1991, the DMK suffered a severe defeat, and Stalin also lost his constituency to the AIADMK. In 1996 he was successful again and returned to the Assembly. In 2001 and 2006, Stalin was able to defend the constituency, and in 2011 he was also successful in the Kolathur constituency in Chennai.

At the same time as he was a member of parliament, Stalin successfully ran for the first direct election of the mayor of Chennai in 1996 as a DMK candidate. In 2001 he was re-elected. The following year, however, he had to resign after the AIADMK government J. Jayalalithaas passed a law prohibiting the accumulation of offices . The Madras High Court later declared the law null and void, but also ruled that Stalin's re-election had not been allowed because a person was not allowed to run for mayor's office twice in a row. Shortly after the AIADMK had won the elections in Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin was arrested in 2001 together with M. Karunanidhi and other leading DMK politicians in a night and fog action on allegations of corruption. The background to the allegations were irregularities in the construction of elevated roads in Chennai during Stalin's mayorship. The arrest is seen as a case of political vengeance on the part of Jayalalithaa and created a crisis between the Tamil Nadu government and the central government.

After DMK took over government responsibility again in 2006 , M. Karunanidhi , who was re-elected as Chief Minister , appointed his son MK Stalin as Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration in his cabinet. In 2009 Stalin became Deputy Chief Minister. He lost both posts after the AIADMK won the election in 2011. Since his appointment as Deputy Chief Minister, Stalin has been seen as the most promising successor to Karunanidhi at the top of the DMK, even if his brother MK Azhagiri (also a DMK politician and minister in the all -Indian government) has questioned Stalin's claim to leadership. In January 2013, Karunanidhi named Stalin as his political heir.

Familiar

MK Stalin has been married to his wife Durgavathy since 1975. He has a son, Udayanidhi, who works as a film producer, and a daughter, Senthamarai.
