MDA-MB-231 cells are a model cell line ( breast cancer , adenocarcinoma ) used in biomedical research and the like. a. is used in cancer research . They were isolated from a 51 year old female patient with European ancestry.

The cells are aneuploid . The chromosomes N8 and N15 are missing. They express epidermal growth factor ( EGF ) and transforming growth factor alpha ( TGF alpha). MDA-MB-231 cells grow fibroblastoid- elongated and are highly invasive .
