The mechanical engineering and metal trade association (MMBG) was a commercial trade association and was responsible for the statutory accident insurance . From 1994 to 2010 it formed an administrative association together with the Hütten- und Walzwerk-Berufsgenossenschaft (HWBG), whose head office was located in Düsseldorf .

MMBG insured, supervised and advised companies that work and process metals and manufacture metal products. These include car manufacturers as well as car workshops, mechanical engineering companies as well as screw manufacturers and steel construction companies. It also offered its member companies an extensive seminar program.

The local jurisdiction of the MMBG extended to the states of North Rhine-Westphalia (excluding the Lippe district), Rhineland-Palatinate (only the former administrative districts and Trier), Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony (excluding the former Chemnitz district).

In order to support its members and insured persons, the MMBG had, in addition to the main and district administration Düsseldorf, further district administrations in Dessau, Dortmund and Cologne, as well as an office in Dresden.

MMBG fulfilled its consulting mandate by means of special expert groups for various areas of the metal industry.

MMBG belonged to the metalworking and rolling mill trade association and the trade association Metall Nord Süd (BGM) of the association of metal trade associations (VMBG).

On January 1, 2011, MMBG merged with the Hütten- und Walzwerk-Berugfsgenossenschaft, the Berufsgenossenschaft Metall Nord Süd and the Holz-Berufsgenossenschaft to form the Berufsgenossenschaft Holz und Metall (BGHM).
