The trade association Metall Nord Süd (BGM) was a commercial trade association and sponsor of the statutory accident insurance for around 95,000 companies and around 2.6 million employees in fifteen federal states. It existed from March 30, 2007 to December 31, 2010. On January 1, 2011, it merged with three other professional associations to form the professional association for wood and metal .

The job of the employers' liability insurance association was to use all suitable means to prevent accidents at work , occupational diseases and work-related health hazards, as well as to provide effective first aid. After the occurrence of an accident at work or an occupational disease, it had to restore the health and productivity of the insured by all appropriate means and to compensate the insured or their surviving dependents with cash benefits.

Organization and responsibility

BG Metall Nord Süd was a legally competent federal corporation under public law with self-administration . Its headquarters were in Mainz with branches in Hanover and Stuttgart . Regionally, BG Metall Nord Süd was represented with district administrations in Bremen, Berlin, Erfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Mainz, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart. Branch offices were in Bad Hersfeld, Chemnitz, Freiburg, Rostock, Saarbrücken and Traunstein. She operated training facilities in Bad Bevensen, Bad Wilsnack, Lengfurt and Sennfeld. BG Metall Nord Süd employed around two thousand people.

The professional association was responsible for companies that produce iron, steel, metal and precious metal or that process iron, steel, metal, precious metal, precious stones, semi-precious stones and plastic as the main material or manufacture products from them. The member companies of the trade association included Volkswagen , Daimler , BMW , Audi , Arcelor Mittal , Salzgitter AG , Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft , Papenburger Meyer Werft , Märklin and the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik WMF .

The local jurisdiction of BG Metall Nord Süd extended to the states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Saarland, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia as well as parts of the states of North Rhine-Westphalia , Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony.

BG Metall Nord Süd was created on March 30, 2007 through the merger of the North German Metal Employers' Liability Insurance Association (Hanover) and the Metall Süd industrial association (Mainz).

The Norddeutsche Metall-BG was founded in 1885 as the Northwestern Iron and Steel Employer's Liability Insurance Association.

BG Metall Süd was created in 2005 through the merger of the Süddeutsche Metall-Berufsgenossenschaft (Mainz) and the precious and base metal professional association (Stuttgart). The Süddeutsche Metall-BG was founded in 1885 as the Süddeutsche Eisen- und Stahl-Berufsgenossenschaft. It was renamed in 1993 as part of the eastward expansion (establishment of the Erfurt district administration).

The BG Metall Nord Süd formed together with the mechanical engineering and metal professional association (Düsseldorf) and the steel and rolling mill professional association (Düsseldorf) the union of the metal professional associations. On January 1, 2011, these three trade associations and the wood trade association merged to form the trade association for wood and metal.
