The professional association for wood and metal ( BGHM or BG for wood and metal for short ) is one of nine commercial professional associations and thus a provider of statutory accident insurance . It was created on January 1, 2011 through the merger of the steel and rolling mill trade association , the mechanical engineering and metal trade association , the trade association Metall Nord Süd and the wood trade association . This makes the BGHM one of the three largest statutory accident insurance carriers in Germany. It looks after around 5.4 million employees in around 227,000 companies.

The job of the employers' liability insurance association is to use all suitable means to prevent accidents at work , occupational diseases and work-related health hazards, as well as to provide effective first aid. After the occurrence of an insured event (accident at work, commuting accident or occupational disease), it must restore the health and productivity of the insured by all appropriate means and compensate the insured or their surviving dependents with cash benefits.

Organization and responsibility

The BGHM is a legally competent federal corporation under public law with self-administration . Its head office is in Mainz with main administrative offices in Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Hanover and Munich. The BGHM is regional with locations in Alsfeld, Berlin, Bielefeld, Bremen, Chemnitz, Dessau-Roßlau, Dortmund, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Erfurt, Freiburg, Hamburg, Hanover, Heidelberg, Cologne, Leipzig, Mainz, Munich, Nuremberg, Rostock, Saarbrücken , Stuttgart and Traunstein. The BGHM operates educational institutions in Bad Bevensen, Bad Wilsnack, Triefenstein-Lengfurt, Nümbrecht, Schierke, Schwelm and Sennfeld.

In the Federal Republic of Germany, the BGHM is materially responsible for companies that produce wood and for companies that process wood, plastics or similar materials. The employers' liability insurance association continues to be responsible for companies in the iron, steel, precious metal and metal production and for companies that process iron, steel, metal, precious metal, precious stones, semi-precious stones and similar materials. The member companies of the professional association include furniture manufacturers, sawmills, carpenters and packaging manufacturers as well as rolling mills, automobile manufacturers, diamond grinding shops and shipyards.
