MM jazz festival

The MM Jazz Festival (also called M. Mendt Jazz Festival ) has been an annual autumn festival since 2005 in St. Pölten . It developed into an integral part of the jazz scene in Lower Austria . "MM" stands for Marianne Mendt , founder and artistic director of the event.

history

Mendt founded the MM Musikwerkstatt at the end of 2004 with the aim of promoting Austrian jazz musicians. The festival as part of the workshop project in cooperation with the Festspielhaus St. Pölten took place for the first time from September 14th to 18th, 2005 with participants such as Peter Wolf , Upper Austrian Big Band , Lungau Big Band , Karl Ratzer , Richard Oesterreicher and Viktor Gernot . In addition to professional musicians, young artists also perform at the event. In 2007 the festival sampler was nominated from the first edition in 2005 at the Amadeus Awards in the category “Jazz / Blues / Folk Album of the Year national”. The tenth performance in 2014 coincided with the 50th stage anniversary of the eponym.

In 2013, the ninth edition of the MM Nachwuchs Award was presented for the first time as part of the jazz festival. In 2013, Kristina Trezune won it in the “Best Singer” category and the alto saxophonist Stefan Gottfried in the “Instrumentalist” category . In 2014 the award went to singer Nina Strnad.
