Lists on the subject

The Bergmann MP28 was a German submachine gun from the interwar period. It was developed by Hugo Schmeisser from the MP18 .

description

The MP 28 is a closing blowback loader with a mass lock and wooden stock. The barrel is surrounded by a perforated barrel jacket. The two-row bar magazine holds 32 rounds. The magazine slot is on the left, the ejection window on the right. In contrast to the MP18, single fire can also be fired. The fire selector switch is located above the trigger. The weapon, which is otherwise very similar to the MP18, can be visually differentiated from it.

Development and production

Due to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty , Germany was not allowed to manufacture submachine guns for the Reichswehr . However, submachine guns of this type were eventually introduced for the German police. License rights for the weapon were also transferred to the Bayard company in Belgium. The weapon was exported worldwide and thus established, among other things, the legendary reputation of Hugo Schmeisser , who had already distinguished himself as the designer of the submachine gun 18. Submachine guns of this type (mainly from Belgian production) were also used in large numbers in the Spanish Civil War.

commitment

The Wehrmacht showed no interest in the weapon. During the Second World War , the weapon was widely used by police associations. This weapon was used by German soldiers or members of the SS or the SD (Security Service of the SS) during the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto .

In 1939 a variant of the MP 28 under the designation FMP was intended as a remote-controlled submachine gun for use in bunkers on the Siegfried Line. The copies produced since 1939 were finally assembled there, but not used in combat. What happened to them after the disarmament of the Western Wall can no longer be clarified today.

When the German Wehrmacht occupied Belgium in the course of the western campaign in 1940, they took over larger numbers of the Belgian licensed version of the MP 28. However, production in the Belgian arsenal in Herstal was not resumed. The Wehrmacht designated the weapon with the booty designation Maschinenpistole 740 (b) ; it was completely identical to the weapons made in Germany. The captured specimens were used exclusively by the local occupation forces, the police and the SD. It was no longer used by armed forces at the front.

Further developments

The British Sten- and Lanchester- MPis are based on the MP28.
