The mRNA-cap-methyltransferase (MT) ( gene name: RNMT ) is the enzyme in the cell nucleus of animals that catalyzes the attachment of a 5'-cap structure to freshly synthesized mRNA . The reaction is important for the protection and further processing of the mRNA. The enzyme is part of the capping complex that forms in eukaryotes after the pre-initiation complex breaks down at the beginning of transcription . In humans, the enzyme is found in all types of tissue .
