The Maaraue is a peninsula at the confluence of the Main and the Rhine . Since it was redesigned in the mid-1990s, it has completely belonged to the Wiesbaden district of Mainz-Kostheim .

The maar floodplain was of greater importance at the heyday of rafting on the Main , which is why the arm that separates the maar floodplain from the mainland is still called the Floßhafen or Lache today. In this raft harbor, the raftsmen were able to moor safely due to the lower current. After the rafting was stopped, the flow coming from the Main was changed in such a way that the maar floodplain only becomes a real island during floods, while at normal water levels a section of a good 100 meters is regularly dry and forms a solid land connection. The part of the raft harbor that still carries water today forms a harbor for the boats of the Wiesbaden water police station and for leisure boats, and it also serves as a training area for rowers. The importance of the raft harbor once becomes clear from the fact that today it is extremely difficult to determine who has to contribute to the costs for the removal of the highly contaminated sludge from the raft harbor and who is allowed to award the corresponding orders, as there are many responsibilities and Overlap ownership. In addition to the immediate neighbors city of Wiesbaden and the state of Hesse are u. a. the federal government is also involved through the waterways and shipping directorate, older residents also report about Bavarian rights at the raft harbor.

The German Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa held a large court day here at Pentecost 1184 , which became known as the Mainzer Hoftag . According to the Saxon world chronicle, this festival was the largest and most splendid event of its kind in Germany. Two of his sons were in the here knighthood added. According to Gislebert von Mons , Chancellor of Hainaut , 70,000 guests, including kings and dukes, attended. However, the information on the number of participants fluctuates greatly, the Saxon World Chronicle speaks of 40,000 knights, the Marbach annals name seventy imperial princes with their entourage. A sandstone column by Erwin Mosen has been commemorating this important day since the 800th anniversary in 1984.

A station of the Hessian water police is located at the northern tip of the Maaraue . The Maaraue is now predominantly a recreational area, where u. a. a campsite and an outdoor swimming pool are located, a larger meadow is released for barbecues. The Maaraue is also home to the sports facilities of the TV Kostheim and the football clubs Kostheim 05 and Kostheim 12 as well as a larger allotment garden. The last commercial enterprise is located on the Maaraue with a boatyard for pleasure craft, which has a landing facility on the Rhine side . The Maaraue is part of the three -bridge path ( Theodor-Heuss-Brücke , Kostheim-Gustavsburg road bridge and Südbrücke ), which people in Mainz like to walk. From the time of the Mainz fortress there is still a fort, the Rheinschanze, which today houses restaurants. The Kostheim wastewater treatment plant at the southern tip of the Aue became part of the Rhine-Main Industrial Culture Route after it was closed .
