The Maasgotik or Maasland Gothic is the name for the Gothic architectural style in the Dutch or Belgian Principality of Liège (and thus the Belgian-Dutch Maas area ) in the 13th to the 16th century. Characteristic of the Maas Gothic is the use of Maaskapitellen , carved capitals with stylized leaves crowning of limestone - pillars . The churches are often built from so-called Limburg marl , a special chalk stone from the area.

The original French architectural style came about quite late in the Meuse region, just like in Germany . The Romanesque style remained faithful to the middle of the 13th century (cf. Munsterkerk ; Heiligkreuzkirche , Liège ). Nevertheless, it can be said that the mountain portal of the Maastricht Servaasbasiliek , built in the late 12th century, already has Gothic features (although it is still mainly influenced by the Romanesque).

The regional variant of the (international) Gothic style appears in the Maas area in the 13th century with the building of relatively simple monastery and parish churches, such as the Dominicanenkerk, the Oude Minderbroederskerk and the Sint-Janskerk , all in Maastricht . The Franciscan Church (today the Church of St. Nicholas ) in Aachen can also be counted in this group. Later Aachen oriented itself more towards the Rhineland (cf. the choir of the Aachen cathedral with that of the Cologne cathedral ).

The highlights of the Maas Gothic include the Basilica of Our Lady in Tongeren , the Basilica of the Holy Sacrament in Meerssen , the Collégiale Notre-Dame de Huy in Huy , the Notre-Dame de Dinant in Dinant and three churches in Liège: the St. Paul's Cathedral , the Church of Saint-Martin and the Church of Saint-Jacques (both from the first half of the 16th century). The latter has a very exuberant interior design. In Maastricht, the cloister of the Basilica of Our Lady was not renewed until around 1560 in a very late form of the Maasgothic style with transitional elements of the Maasland Renaissance .
