The Mac-Mahon family, dukes of Magenta , also Margraves of Éguilly since 1750, are a French noble family of Irish origin who came to France with the Jacobites at the end of the 17th century .

history

Sully Castle , family seat of the Mac-Mahon in Burgundy

The family belonged to the Irish gentry . Moriart MacMahon stayed in Ireland at the end of the 17th century to support the throne claims of the exiled Catholic King James II from the House of Stuart , but his brother Constantin René and his two sons came to France in the wake of Charles Edward Stuart . A grandson, Maurice, was naturalized in France in 1750 and became lord of Magnien in Burgundy. Jean-Baptiste de Mac Mahon (* 1715) married a noblewoman from the House of Belin d'Éguilly at Sully Castle and was made Marquis d'Éguilly. His nephew Charles-Marie de Mac Mahon donated one line (the Marquis de Mac Mahon), his brother Patrice de Mac-Mahon another (the Ducs de Magenta). The latter became Marshal in the Second Empire and finally President of the Third Republic.
