Macduff is a whiskey distillery in Banff , Banffshire , Scotland . It is on the opposite bank of the Deveron from the city . It belongs to the Speyside whiskey region , but is sometimes also assigned to the Highlands .

history

Macduff was founded in 1962 by business people Brodie Hepburn, Marty Dykes and George Crawford. In 1972 it was taken over by William Lawson (a whiskey business founded in Dundee in 1849) and incorporated into the Martini Group in 1980 . This has been part of Bacardi since 1993 .

production

The water for production comes from the Gelly spring. The distillery started with two stills , a wash still (coarse still) and a spirit style (fine still). Over the years, the number of stills has steadily increased so that there are currently two wash stills and three spirit stills available. The distillery has a maximum production capacity of 28,000  hl .

Macduff has always been open to changes and innovations in the manufacturing process. It was the first Scottish distillery to use metal mash tuns. They were also the first to heat their stills with steam. The production cannot be visited.

Bottlings

Single-malt bottlings under the name Macduff are only known by independent bottlers. Original bottlings have recently been launched under the name The Deveron . The previous sales brand Glen Deveron will be gradually replaced. However, the majority of the whiskey produced is used for the production of blends , especially the blends of the William Lawson’s brand .
