Macho, Macho is a song that helped the Austrian songwriter Rainhard Fendrich to achieve a commercial breakthrough in the Federal Republic of Germany and Switzerland .

Background and publication

Rainhard Fendrich 2015

According to his own information, Fendrich wrote the song in his early 30s with simple cross rhymes within a few minutes as a reaction to an article in Brigitte magazine , in which a turn from softie to macho was called for. He wanted to make an ironic statement with the song, which he saw as more of a silliness. The song is sung entirely in Viennese dialect. The B-side of the record had the song sung in Spanish.

The number was not taken from an album by Fendrich, but appeared separately as both a 7 " single and a 12" maxi single on Ariola . Produced was Macho Macho by Tato Gomez , who celebrated with the single also its commercial breakthrough. Fendrich and Gomez have since worked together successfully on other projects. In the form of an album, the number was released for the first time in 1992 on I Am From Austria and in the live version in 1989 on the recording Das Konzert . The 1994 compilation also contained the title Macho, Macho and the title gave this album its name.

Commercial win

In addition to number 3 in the German charts in 1988, the single also made it to first place in the ZDF hit parade . In the Federal Republic of Germany, the song was awarded a gold record as the songwriter's first work . In Switzerland, the single was able to secure a third place in the national hit list. In Austria the single reached number one and stayed in the charts for 30 weeks. Even today, the number, played by Fendrich mostly unplugged , is one of the highlights of his concerts and is sung by the fans with confidence.
