Mackay Davashe
Makwenkwe "Mackay" Davashe (* 1920 in East London , † 1972 in Soweto ) was a South African jazz musician ( tenor saxophonist , band leader) and songwriter.
In the mid-1940s, Davashe belonged to the Jazz Maniacs , a top South African orchestra. In the 1950s he led jazz groups such as the Union All-Star Band , the Shantytown Sextet and the Jazz Dazzlers , with whom he toured nationally and which also included Kippie Moeketsi . He also recorded with King Force Silgees Jazz Forces (1953), with Dolly Rathebe (1954) and with the Jazz Maniacs (1958). Then he toured with the Manhattan Brothers and was part of the ensemble of Todd Matshikiza's musical King Kong , for which he also arranged. In the late 1960s he was part of Gideon Nxumalo's band .
One of his most famous compositions is Lakutshona Ilanga , which was also recorded by Miriam Makeba , Abdullah Ibrahim and Angélique Kidjo ; Makeba also sang his song Kilimanjaro . Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath had his title Davashe's Dream in their repertoire; Hugh Masekela interpreted his Saduva in 2002 .
