Macrotylus paykullii is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 2.8 to 3.7 millimeters long. The species of the genus Macrotylus are showy animals with a gray-green basic color and rather parallel margins. They can be recognized by their thick hair with coarse, dark hair on the hemielytres and also have a conspicuous pattern on the membranes of the hemielytres. The spurs of the splints ( tibia ) are fine and inconspicuous. Macrotylus paykullii can be identified by its small size and the color of the first antennae , which is dark and predominantly black.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed from southern Scandinavia to the Mediterranean and North Africa and east across Asia Minor to the Caspian region. In Germany, with the exception of parts of the north-west German lowlands, it is widespread and frequent. It has only been found sporadically in Austria, which may indicate an insufficient state of research. Mainly dry, warm, open habitats are settled.

Way of life

The bedbugs live on the rest of the world ( Ononis ), especially the thorny restoration ( Ononis spinosa ), but also the creeping restoration ( Ononis repens ). They are also said to suckle on insects that stick to the glandular secretions of the host plants. The adults can be observed from the beginning of June until the beginning of September.
