Macrurosaurus ( "long-tailed lizard") is a genus of sauropod dinosaur from the period of the Lower Cretaceous of Europe .

This titanosaur lived 140 to 99 million years ago ( Valanginium to Albium ) in what is now England . Like all sauropods, Macrurosaurus was herbivorous and quadruped . Since only a few fossil skeletal fragments are known, estimates by paleontologists assume a length of 12 meters and a height of 4 meters, which is relatively small for a sauropod .

Only a few fossil tail vertebrae of this dinosaur are known, which were discovered near Cambridge on the Isle of Wight . On the basis of these fossils, the type species Macrurosaurus semnus was scientifically described for the first time in 1876 by Harry Govier Seeley . The genus is considered to be the noun dubium , which means that too few finds are available for an exact description of the genus.
