The Madagascar colored frogs ( Mantella ) are a genus in the family Madagascar frogs . It comprises 16 described species, all of which are endemic to Madagascar .
description
The species are small (15-35 mm), mostly diurnal and sometimes very brightly colored frogs . They can only be found on Madagascar and some offshore islands.
In their appearance they are similar to the poison dart frogs (Dendrobatidae), to which they are not related. Some species secrete a poisonous secretion through the skin. They therefore have warning color combinations of jet black, orange, yellow and iridescent blue. Some species are non-toxic, but mimic their poisonous conspecifics in terms of color.
Usually the ends of the fingers and toes are slightly to greatly enlarged. Between the individual fingers, respectively. Toes are webbed.
distribution
Most of the Madagascar cichlid frog species live in the rainforest, with some species also occurring in the transition regions to the savannah or to grassy areas. Mostly they lay their clutch on the ground or in tree hollows near water. Later, the tadpoles snake in the accumulations of water or are washed into tiny bodies of water by the rain.
