Madeleine De Meulemeester

Madeleine De Meulemeester (born January 8, 1904 in Bruges , † September 3, 1996 in Lincé ) was a Belgian lawyer, scout functionary , Jewish savior and Righteous Among the Nations .

Life

Madeleine De Meulemeester studied law and received her doctorate from the Université libre de Bruxelles . With Chanoine Leclerq, she founded the Jeunesse Universitaire Catholique féminine (JUC) and the Association des Femmes Universitaires Catholiques (AFUC), which she later transferred to the scout organization Guides Catholiques de Belgique . After the occupation of Belgium by Germany during World War II, she joined the resistance together with her sister Marcelle . They hid Jewish children and made sure that other children were hidden, such as Henri Szlamovicz, whom Hélène de Bie (née Vandenbril ; 1896–1983) took into their care in 1942 as a five-month-old baby and him, later together with her husband Benoît de Bie († 1972), raised her child until 1948. Clandestine radio programs were broadcast from the sisters' apartment .

From 1946 to 1954 she was Commissioner General of the French-speaking branch of the Guides Catholiques de Belgique. From 1954 to 1963 she was a member of the World Committee of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts .

In 1999 she and her sister Marcelle were named Righteous Among the Nations. Other members of the De Meulemeester family followed in 2001, including Josane De Meulemeester , née Sigart.
