Madge Dorita Sinclair (born April 28, 1938 in Kingston , Jamaica as Madge Walters , † December 20, 1995 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film and stage actress .

biography

Sinclair was an acting student who postponed her professional career after graduating from drama school because she married the Jamaican police officer Royston Sinclair at an early age. She worked as a teacher for many years and over time had two sons by Sinclair. In 1968 she left her family and moved to New York City to pursue her dream of acting. In 1969 the divorce took place.

In order to be able to stay afloat financially, Sinclair worked as a photo model and later appeared at the New York Shakespearean Festival . Despite the limited opportunities black actors had in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Sinclair managed to appear in Joseph Papps' theater and the Brooklyn Academy of Music as well.

In 1972 she stood in front of the camera for the first time as the leading actress in the 35-minute short film The Witches of Salem: The Horror and the Hope . Her best-known films included the miniseries Roots from 1977, the road movie Convoy from 1978 and the 1988 comedy The Prince from Zamunda .

The science fiction film Star Trek IV: Back to the Present , in which Sinclair played the captain of the USS Saratoga as the first female captain in Star Trek history, should also be highlighted.

Madge Sinclair found her second husband in the actor Dean Compton , and she married him on August 18, 1982.

In the early 1980s she was diagnosed with leukemia , a disease from which she died in 1995 at the age of 57.
