Madho Singh I.

Sawai Madho Singh I. (* December 1728 in Jaipur ; † March 5, 1768 ibid) was Maharaja of the princely state of Jaipur ( India ) from 1750 to 1768.

biography

Madho Singh was the younger son of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II and fought bitterly against his older brother Ishwari Singh (r. 1743–1750) for power, which he only gained after his suicide. Despite his enormous body (he weighed about 250 kg) or, better still, his army, he succeeded in several battles against neighboring principalities and against the Marathas , who had taken Jaipur in 1751, to keep the upper hand.

In gratitude for Madho Singh's mediation services against his power-obsessed Wezir Safdarjung , the politically weak Mughal ruler Ahmad Shah transferred to him in 1753 the fortress of Ranthambore , located about 100 km southeast of Jaipur , which meant an enormous increase in territorial power.
