Ishwari Singh

Sawai Ishwari Singh or Ishwar Singh (* 1718 in Jaipur ; † 1750 ibid) was maharajah of the princely state of Jaipur ( India ) from 1743 to 1750.

Ishwari Singh was the eldest son of Maharajah Sawai Jai Singh II. After his death, a violent power struggle broke out against his younger stepbrother Madho Singh . He besieged Jaipur at the head of a coalition army consisting of troops from the neighboring states of Jodhpur , Kota , Bundi , Shahpura and Mewar as well as from the Marathas ; the enemy army, however, was crushed.

To commemorate the victory, Ishwari Singh built the minaret-like, called Sarga Suli or Ishar laat , 6-storey tower with a final chhatri at the Tripolia bazaar in Jaipur.

Tomb and Succession

In 1750, Ishwari Singh committed suicide in the course of a court intrigue; his tomb is in the Talkatora Gardens near the City Palace of Jaipur. His younger stepbrother Madho Singh succeeded him to the throne and ruled the princely state of Jaipur from 1750 to 1768.
