Sister Madonna Buder (born July 24, 1930 in St. Louis , USA ) is a Catholic religious sister and triathlete from the USA. She currently holds the world record as the oldest female triathlete to ever finish an Ironman . For her athletic achievements she was awarded the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame in 2014. She is listed in the Ironman Hawaii Age Group Records table .

Religious life

At the age of 23, Madonna Buder entered a convent near her home in Missouri as a sister . In 1970 she joined the Sisters for Christian Community (SFCC) in Spokane .

Athletic career

Sister Madonna Buder began her sporting career at the age of 48. After getting permission from her bishop, Father John, she started running and, at 52, her first triathlon. As a 55-year-old, she finished her first Ironman (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running).
Sister Madonna Buder has now contested more than 340 triathlons. Thanks to her participation in over 45 Ironman races, she is also called "Iron Nun" (Iron Nun).

In her sporting career, she has won eleven national championship titles and sixteen world championships. She was age group world champion at Ironman Hawaii twelve times . With her successful participation in Ironman Canada 2012 with a total time of 16:32:00 h at the age of 82 years and 32 days, she holds the world record as the oldest woman to finish an Ironman. It is only surpassed by the male triathlete Lew Hollander , who successfully finished the Ironman Florida 2014 as an 84-year-old.
In November 2014 Madonna Buder finished the Ironman Florida , but reached the finish five minutes after the official timekeeping and was therefore no longer included in the list of results.

  • In October 2010, Sister Madonna Buder published her autobiography with the title: "The Grace to Race: The Wisdom and Inspiration of the 80-Year-Old World Champion Triathlete Known as the Iron Nun".
