Lewis E. Hollander, Jr. , Lew Hollander for short , (born June 6, 1930 ) is an American physicist , triathlete and endurance rider . He held the world record as the oldest triathlete to have completed an Ironman (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running).

His record has since been broken by Hiromu Inada , who finished the Ironman in Hawaii in 2018 at the age of 85.

Athletic career

Equestrian sport

Lewis Hollander won the runner-up national title in endurance riding in 1973. In 1998 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the American Endurance Ride Conference together with his wife Hanne Hollander , 1979 national champion .

Triathlon

Lew Hollander only started triathlon in 1985 at the age of 55. His first triathlon was the Ironman Hawaii 1985, for which he signed up without even owning a bike. In the meantime Lew Hollander has successfully completed over 20 Ironman competitions. With his finish at the Ironman Hawaii 2012 at the age of 82 years and 129 days, he took over from Sister Madonna Buder the title of the oldest Ironman finisher, and was also the eldest athlete, who finished the Ironman Hawaii, Guinness World Records recorded .

In 2013 he finished another Ironman with the Ironman Florida and thus improved his own record as the oldest Ironman finisher to 83 years and 149 days. A year later, Lew Hollander, now 84, crossed the finish line at the Ironman Florida, which was held without swimming over 3.8 km due to the weather.

Hollander has already started 24 times in Hawaii. In 2015, the 85-year-old was the first athlete in the 85-89 age group to start, but could not finish the race.

Scientific and literary activity

Lewis Holländer wrote numerous scientific articles in the field of solid-state physics in the 1950s and 1960s and in 2001 a para- scientific article on the inexplicable transient weight gain in animals during death. Patents have been applied for for several of his inventions .

In 1981 Lew Hollander published the equestrian book “Successful Endurance Riding” together with Patricia Ingram, which was reissued in 1989 in an expanded version under the title “Endurance Riding: From Beginning to Winning”. After these books, his science fiction novel "And Chocolate Shall Lead Us" was published in 2004 .

Lew Hollander is married to his wife Hanne and has six children.
