The Basilica Santa Maria Madre della Consolazione ( Italian Basilica Maria Trost ) is a pilgrimage church in Reggio Calabria in the Italian region of Calabria . The church, also known as the Basilica of Eremo, stands on the hill of the same name on Aspromonte three kilometers above the city center. The parish church of the Archdiocese of Reggio Calabria-Bova bears the patronage of Comforter of the Afflicted and has the rank of minor basilica . The structure was built in 1965 to replace a 16th century church.

history

Instead of an old votive chapel, a church with a Benedictine monastery was built between 1532 and 1547, which was completed in 1569. The monastery was named Della Madonna della Consolazione after the plague of 1576 from the altarpiece . The complex was destroyed in the earthquake in Messina in 1908 and was replaced by a makeshift wooden church with brick walls from 1912 until the 1950s. The current church was designed by the architect Anna Sbarracani Anastasi in the modern style. The foundation stone for the reinforced concrete construction was laid in 1954. The church was consecrated on July 30, 1965. On November 28, 1971 the sanctuary was opened by Pope Paul VI. raised to the minor basilica.

Furnishing

The venerated altarpiece is a painting of the Madonna della Consolazione, created in 1547 by the local painter Niccolò Andrea Caprioli. This used to be carried repeatedly to the cathedral of Reggio Calabria during epidemics , today it is brought into the cathedral in a procession during the city festival in September for the birth of the Virgin Mary and back in November. Other important works are the bronze tablets by the sculptor Alessandro Monteleone and the Way of the Cross by the sculptor Pasquale Panetta.
