Mafianeindanke is an anti-mafia association that was founded in Berlin in 2007 because of the mafia murders in Duisburg . He works actively to fight organized crime in Germany.

origin

On August 15, 2007, six people were murdered in front of the Italian restaurant Da Bruno in Duisburg . They were victims of a blood feud between Ndrangheta families. This crime gained widespread attention in the German media and beyond as the Mafia murders in Duisburg .

In response to what they consider to be superficial and stereotypical depictions of Italian organized crime in Germany, a group of Italian migrants decided to get involved to educate people about mafia activities in Germany and Europe. The initiative called on restaurateurs and other entrepreneurs to report any protection racket. The impetus for the establishment was given by the then managing director of the Unione Italiani nel Mondo (UIM, Union of Italians in the World), Laura Garavini , together with Italian restaurateurs in Berlin. The model for the initiative was, among others, the Italian anti- mafia movement Addiopizzo . In the period that followed, “Mafia? No thanks! ” Works closely with anti-mafia initiatives such as Libera and, like them, is part of the FLARE network.

aims

  • Education about mafia and criminal organizations in Germany and Europe.
  • Raising public awareness in Germany for the problem of organized crime. This should not be viewed and combated as a purely national phenomenon, but pursued within the framework of international cooperation, especially within the EU.
  • Defense and affirmation of values of legality. Respect for common rules must be the basis of any democratic society.
  • Constant observation and evaluation of mafia activities in Germany and cooperation with journalists, lawyers and the police who work in the field of organized crime.
  • Support of youth projects that deal with the education about organized crime.
  • To be the point of contact for everyone who feels threatened by the Mafia and needs help, support and advice.

activities

Shortly after the massacre in Duisburg - in December 2007 - members of the Camorra tried to blackmail some restaurant operators in Berlin. The Camorristi set a restaurant and cars on fire to intensify their blackmail: “Mafia? No thanks! ”Encouraged the entrepreneurs concerned to organize and supported them in reporting them to the police. The blackmailers were then arrested and convicted. The resistance of the Berlin restaurateurs is considered to be the most successful resistance to date against mafia protection money extortion outside of Italy.

Since 2008, the association has organized numerous public readings, panel discussions, cultural evenings and discussions with contemporary witnesses. Interlocutors are primarily those affected by mafia activities, journalists and representatives from politics and law enforcement. Other prominent guests include Petra Reski , Nando Dalla Chiesa , Ehrhart Körting , Francesco Forgione (former chairman of the Italian anti-mafia commission), Wolfgang Wieland and Reinhold Jaretzky . The chairman of the association is the journalist and author Sandro Mattioli , who works mainly on the Italian Mafia in Germany.

Fixed components are the annual meeting “Women and Mafia” and the “Festival of Legality” in Berlin. As part of these events, in cooperation with journalists, politicians, lawyers and other representatives of civil society, the focus was on the urgently needed harmonization and updating of the legislation to combat organized crime in Europe.

The association was reported by the German authorities in 2010 as “best practice” in the working group on combating organized crime of the Council of the European Union , as a positive example of the commitment of representatives of civil society in the fight against organized crime.

The association also has branches, including in Munich. The department in the Rhine-Neckar area is no longer active.
