Laura Garavini (born July 23, 1966 in Vignola , Modena province ) is a German-Italian politician. Since 2003 she has both Italian and German citizenship. Garavini is a senator in the Italian parliament.

education

After graduating from high school in Vignola , Garavini studied political science and sociology at the University of Bologna . At the University of Luiss in Rome she did a master's degree in the management of European joint projects.

job

Garavini came to Germany in 1989 . She initially worked at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , taught Italian émigré children on behalf of the Italian Consulate General in Hamburg, and from 1996 onwards she worked for the German government- funded integration project “Pro Qualification” in Cologne . From 1999, she was in Berlin Head of the Italian Sozialberatungsstelle ITAL-UIL at the DGB Berlin-Brandenburg. From 2004 to the beginning of her activity as a member of parliament, Garavini worked for the trade union association “Union of Italians in the World” (UIM).

In 2007, after alleged members of the Calabrian Mafia organization 'Ndrangheta shot six compatriots in Duisburg , she founded the Mafia? Initiative with prominent Italian restaurateurs in Berlin . No thanks! . By “Mafia? No thanks! ”In December 2007 the biggest rebellion against mafia protection racket outside Italy took place. More than 40 Italian restaurant owners in Berlin filed charges after a chain of blackmail attempts. The police arrested two members of the Neapolitan Camorra.

In the parliamentary elections in Italy in 2008 Garavini ran on the list of the Partito Democratico as a representative of the Italians living abroad in the constituency of Europe. She was elected to the Chamber of Deputies with the most preference votes (25,070 votes) . In the parliamentary elections in Italy in 2013 , Garavini ran as the top candidate of her party in the constituency of Europe and was able to move into parliament again with a record result of 37,813 preferential votes. In the parliamentary elections in Italy in 2018 , she ran for the Senate ( Senato della Repubblica ) and achieved the best result of all candidates with 36,386 preferential votes.

On September 18, 2019, Laura Garavini joined the newly founded parliamentary group Italia Viva . There she was elected first deputy chairman. Since February 2020 she has been chairwoman of the Senate Defense Committee.

From November 2008 to March 2013 Garavini was group leader of the Partito Democratico in the anti-mafia committee of the Italian parliament. In 2010 she was one of the MPs who called for the introduction of an anti-mafia code for the lists of candidates of the parties in elections. After Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's narrow success in the vote of confidence in the Italian Parliament on December 14, 2010, Garavini spoke of a "bought victory" for the head of government.

In April 2013 Garavini was elected to the parliamentary committee of the Democratic Party in the Chamber of Deputies and was responsible for Europe and foreign affairs.

In her first term of office she was also a member of the European Affairs Committee and the Committee for Italians Abroad.

On July 1, 2013 , Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel , the SPD's top candidate for the state elections in Hesse in 2013 , appointed Laura Garavini to his shadow cabinet, with responsibility for Europe, Integration and Culture. The SPD was able to gain 7 percentage points in the state elections, but a government was subsequently formed without the Social Democrats.

In March 2014, Laura Garavini was appointed chairman of the “Commission for the fight against organized crime at European and international level” in the Italian parliament on the occasion of the Italian EU Council Presidency from summer 2014. Since April 2014 she has also been chairwoman of the German-Italian parliamentary group in the Italian Chamber of Deputies, based on a joint proposal from all parliamentary groups.

Garavini is married and has one daughter.
