The Mafuta is a special ship for the offshore search for diamonds and belongs to Debmarine Namibia , a subsidiary of Namdeb Holding.

history

The diamond search ship Peace in Africa in December 2006 in Africa

The Mafuta was built in 1983 as Dock Express 20 for Dock Express Shipping (later Dockwise ) and converted into a cable layer in 1993 . De Beers took over the ship in 2005, had it converted for diamond hunting at the British shipyard A&P Tyne and renamed it Peace in Africa . It was the first ship of its kind for de Beers. The ship has been flying the flag of Namibia since 2012 .

From 2007 onwards, extensive tests were carried out off South Africa to test the new technology for diamond searching. Then the Peace in Africa worked off the coast of Namibia, in 2011 it changed according to the mining license, about the coast of Kleinzee (South Africa).

In 2013 the ship was renamed Mafuta .

Ship and plant description

The ship, which was built in 1982 in the Netherlands by the Verolme shipyard Heusden, is 169.5 m long, 24.2 m wide and has a draft of 8.9 m. Driven by two Stork-Werkspoor four-stroke diesel engines of the type 6TM410, each with a rated output of 3128 kW , the ship reaches a speed of 16  knots . After the conversion into a special ship for the diamond hunt in 2006 and 2007, a measurement of 15854 GT and a carrying capacity of 7935 dwt resulted .

The on-board dredging equipment on board the ship includes a 240-ton, remote-controlled, underwater crawler excavator with a powerful centrifugal pump that has a capacity of around 10,000 cubic meters of water and gravel per hour. The dredging pump is connected to the on-board diamond processing plant via a long rubber hose with an internal diameter of 655 mm. The ship and the crawler can work in water depths of up to 150 meters.
