Magdalenenkapelle

The Magdalenenkapelle is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage chapel north of the central Hessian town of Amöneburg in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district .

Below the chapel, which was consecrated to Saint Mary Magdalene in 1343 , was the village of Lindau, first mentioned in 1248, until the 14th century . This is why the chapel is also known as the Lindau Chapel ; the name Lemnauer Kirch has been documented for the 18th century .

The original chapel was destroyed in the Thirty Years War between 1633 and 1636 and has been in ruins ever since. Nevertheless, there were still processions to the Magdalen Chapel, whose altar table was preserved.

The remains of the chapel were demolished in 1866 and replaced by a new neo-Gothic building designed by the Kassel architect Peter Zindel , the furnishings of which were designed by Carl Schäfer . The new chapel was inaugurated in 1868.

The chapel has a four-part cross vault extending from a central pillar . Separated by a wall with a large rosette , a choir-like extension is attached to the long rear side. The pulpit is on the left and a Madonna niche on the right .

In July there is an annual Magdalene Octave with Eucharist at the chapel .

The Magdalenenkapelle is under monument protection for historical and cultural reasons .
