Magdeburg fire insurance company
The Magdeburger Feuerversicherungs-Gesellschaft is an insurance company operating in Hanover today.
The insurance was founded on September 2, 1844 by Friedrich Knoblauch (1805–1879) from Magdeburg. The start-up capital amounted to 15 million marks. As early as 1853 she was also abroad. B. active in North America .
In 1899, Hermann Vatke was elected as the successor to the late Robert Tschmarke as general director of the Magdeburg fire insurance company, which he remained until 1916.
Vatke handled the positions built up in direct business in the USA through a subsidiary - the Magdeburg Fire Insurance Company of New York. This decision prevented a possible bankruptcy of the insurance company. The earthquake in San Francisco in 1906 did not shake the Magdeburg company, in contrast to some German fire insurers that had to be liquidated or merged.
From 1930 to 1945 Wilhelm Berndt was the company's general manager. In 1946 the company headquarters were relocated to Salzgitter due to expropriations in the Soviet Zone , in 1948 to Fulda and in 1959 to Hanover.
It was one of the major German fire insurance companies. The Magdeburger Feuerversicherungs-Gesellschaft, with its directorate at Breiten Weg 7/8, was considered the German industry leader of the 19th century.
Currently the Magdeburger fire belongs to the Allianz group.
