Magnor is a Tettstad in the municipality of Eidskog in the Fylke Innlandet in Norway .

Location and history

Magnor, Bahnhof and Norsk Hydro

The place is three kilometers from the border with Sweden . In 2012 it had 960 inhabitants, in 2016 there were 947. The Kongsvingerbane and Riksvei 2 run through the village. Magnor station has been closed since January 1, 1985 .

On the initiative of Svenska freds- och skiljedomsföreningen, a peace memorial was erected on the border between Norway and Sweden in 1914 , designed by the Swedish architect Lars Johan Lehming . During the border wars in the middle of the 17th century there were fortifications such as Magnor skans in the neighborhood .

Industry

The glass and wood industries are the traditional local industries. There are also companies in the mechanical industry (manufacture of locks). Norsk Hydro manufactures aluminum profiles.

The name of the place may come from magn (“force” or “strength”) or from “magnor” (meaning “the strong fortresses”), which indicates its location near the border.
