Magude is a district of the Maputo province in Mozambique with the administrative seat in the eponymous town of Magude . Its area borders in the south on the districts of Moamba and Manhiça , in the west on the Republic of South Africa (with the border in the Kruger National Park ) and in the north and east on the districts of Massingir and Chókwè of the province of Gaza .

The Magude district is 7,010 square kilometers - making it the largest district in the province of Maputo in terms of area - and in 2005 had a population of 62,434 people, which corresponds to a population density of 9 people per square kilometer. Compared to the 1997 census - at that time there were 42,788 people in the Magude district - the population has increased by 45 percent. The population is very young on average, around 42 percent of all residents are under 15 years of age, and their living conditions are predominantly rural; around 19 percent live in urbanized areas.

Facilities and services

There are 88 schools in the Magude district, 53 of which are primary schools ( escolas do ensino primário ). There are 22 health centers providing medical care to the district's population.

In Magude itself there is a branch of the state Correios de Moçambique . In addition, a Mozambican bank, Banco BCI , has a branch in the district, also directly in Magude. The Interior Ministry reports that as of 2005, the district was unable to receive cellular signals.

Administrative division

The Magude district is divided into five administrative posts ( postos administrativos ):

  • Magude
  • Mapulanguene
  • Mahela
  • Motaze
  • Panjane

In contrast to the Boane, Manhiça, Matola and Namaacha districts, the Magude district is not a munizip ( município ), so that it only has very limited rights of self-government.

traffic

The Magude district has so far only a few developed traffic routes, two country roads (406 and 407) cross the area, which is very large and very agricultural . Via the country road 204 there is a connection to the nationally important trunk road EN1 .

Magude is also connected to the national rail network: the Linha de Limpopo (Maputo – Zimbabwe) railway line passes through the district and has a. a train station in the district capital Magude, before it continues to Chókwè.
