Mah Chonggi (born January 17, 1939 in Tokyo ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Mah Chonggi was born on January 17, 1939 in Tokyo , Japan . He received his degrees in medicine from Yonsei University and Seoul National University . After completing his research in Korea in 1966, he went to the USA . He teaches there at the Department of Medicine at Ohio State University and has worked as a radiologist in Toledo , Ohio . In 2002 he withdrew completely from medicine and professional employment and devoted his full attention to writing poetry.

The main subjects of his poems are his experiences as a doctor and his life in Japan and especially the USA. The works, which have a medical background, express the hope that love will have the ability to negate pain. The works that have his life abroad as a background are usually written in a much more complex key. They are about various conflicting feelings such as patriotism, love and anger towards other Koreans and shame that is rooted in the reflections on his homeland. Both subjects, however, show the same compassion for humanity, whether because of their suffering or uprooting, and attain a universality that has become Mah's trademark.
