from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mahadevi Varma ( Hindi : महादेवी वर्मा , Mahādevī Varmā ; born May 26, 1907 in Farrukhabad , Uttar Pradesh ; † September 11, 1987 in Allahabad ) was an Indian poet and writer . She is one of the most important representatives of romantic modern Hindi literature and received the Jnanpith Award in 1982 .

biography

Mahadevi Varma grew up in Jabalpur and moved to Allahabad in the 1920s with her husband, whom she was married to as a child. The couple usually lived separately and each pursued his own interests. She received a Masters degree in Sanskrit from the University of Allahabad . Her husband died in 1966. Mahadevi Varma, who had rebelled against Hindu traditions by refusing to live in marriage, was impressed by Buddhism.

Her literary work began in the 1930s with romantic poetry. Although Mahadevi Varma is often compared to the poet Mirabai because of biographical parallels , her literary themes are different. Mahadevi Varma's poems are mystifying romanticism: pain in separation from the beloved, supreme being; Waiting for the unique, eternal lover who never answers.

Awards

Mahadevi Varma received several Indian state awards: the Padma Bhushan in 1956 , the Jnanpith Award in 1982 and, posthumously, the Padma Vibhushan in 1988 .
