Mahdi Rezai

Mahdi Rezai (born July 25, 1953 in Herat , Afghanistan ) is an Afghan-German medical doctor who works in the field of senology . He is considered the developer of numerous new surgical procedures for the treatment of breast cancer.

Life

Rezai studied human medicine from 1975 to 1981 at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and received his doctorate there in 1982 . After his internship at the gynecological clinic in the state capital Düsseldorf-Gerresheim, he was appointed senior physician there in 1987. A year later, he took over as chief physician's deputy in the Senology Department , thus focusing early on the treatment of breast diseases. Above all, breast-conserving therapy (BET) has been practiced by him since the 1980s and continuously developed. From 1997 to 2019 Rezai was Medical Director of the Breast Center in Düsseldorf Luisenkrankenhaus.

In 1998 Rezai founded the International Senology Initiative against Breast Cancer e. V. (ISI), an association to support breast cancer patients and their relatives. In 1998 he organized the 1st Düsseldorf Breast Cancer Conference, which has taken place every two years since then and has developed into one of the most important international symposia of medical professionals in the fight against breast cancer with up to 1,400 specialist participants.

In 2000, Rezai also founded the West German Breast Center (WBC) in cooperation with the University of Düsseldorf. In cooperation with around 260 clinics in Germany, the WBC collects anonymised quality assurance data on the cases treated and thus has constantly updated benchmarking on the treatment of around 60 percent of all breast cancer in Germany. In the same year, he organized the 1st patient congress, which has taken place annually since then: “Düsseldorf Breast Cancer Information Day” for those affected and their relatives with up to 1,000 participants.

In 2003 he founded the Rezai Foundation - Medical Aid for Herat / Afghanistan , which aims to improve medical care for women in Afghanistan. In 2009 the first hospital for gynecology and obstetrics was opened in Herat, Rezai's birthplace. The construction costs were borne by the foundation. The high medical and hygienic standards established by the foundation in the hospital and up to 100 births per day made a significant contribution to reducing maternal and child mortality in the region. In 2013 an additional building was added to the hospital. Further day clinics in the region are already being planned. The foundation also supports the training of medical personnel from Afghanistan.

In 2008 Rezai founded the European Academy of Senology (EAoS) in Düsseldorf together with the renowned Italian senologist Umberto Veronesi . It offers senior physicians and senior physicians from many European countries advanced training in senology and oncoplastic breast surgery .

Rezai is a trainer within the breast cancer disease management program of the North Rhine Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians for over 1,000 established gynecologists, whom he trains intensively and regularly on this topic. Rezai is also a member of the “Mamma” expert commission of the AGO Working Group on Gynecological Oncology to update the guidelines.

In 2015, Rezai was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .
