history

The Beginnings (1991)

Sister Lucy Kurien (left), founder of Maher

In 1991, when Sister Lucy was still working at the HOPE organization , a pregnant woman came to her and asked her for help. She feared that her husband would kill her in order to marry another woman. Sr. Lucy couldn't do anything for her that evening, but promised her that she would try to help her and that she should come back the next day.

" I was brought up in a secure family environment and I was unaware that one night could make such a difference to the life of a woman"; "That very night, her husband, in a drunken rage, set her on fire. I actually saw the blazing woman and heard her shrieks of agony. We put the fire out and took her to a hospital but she died of 90 degree burns and with her died the seven month old fetus. I was devastated. "

- Sister Lucy

After this experience, Sr. Lucy decided to found Maher in order to no longer be bound by the rules of the monastery and to be able to do more for the people. It took her almost 7 years to get the support she needed, but in 1997 the time had come: In the small village ( Vadhu Budruk ), outside of Pune, the first Maherhaus was opened on February 2nd, 1997.

Development phase (1997)

After it was founded, Maher developed quickly. Within 15 years, over 2000 people took part in the aid programs, 29 permanent houses were founded (4 for women and 25 for children) and Maher expanded into the Indian states of Kerala (2004) and Jharkhand (2008).

The circle of supporters of Mahers also increased significantly. More and more people, mainly from Austria and Germany, but also from the United States and other countries, came to support the project. In 2002 Sr. Lucy traveled to Europe for the first time to introduce Maher. She has since repeated these visits regularly. For example, in 2012 she was on the Catholic Day in Mannheim .

In 2012 Maher celebrated its 15th anniversary with almost 4,000 guests.

today

The association's work has now received numerous awards. For her work at Maher, Sr. Lucy received the Global Women's Leadership Award in 2011 , the DCCIA Award for Excellence in Social Service in 2010 and many other awards.
