Mahir is an Arabic and Turkish male given name (of Arabic origin) meaning "skillful, experienced, suitable".
It occurs mainly on the Balkan Peninsula (Bosnia, Sandžak), in Turkey and in the Arab region.
In addition, it is used as a family name, but mostly only in the Arab world, just like many other proper names are used as family names in Arabic.
In some transcriptions, “Maher” is written instead of “Mahir”. Mahir's a is elongated while i is short.
