history

The hilltop castle was first mentioned in 1222 under the name 'Dewiczky' as a border castle in royal possession. The name of the first known burgrave is Stephan von Mödlau , founder of the Pernstein family .

At first the building was probably made of wood. The castle was built at the end of the 13th century under the reign of King Wenceslaus III. renewed. At the time of the first Turkish siege of Vienna , the castle was reinforced in 1529.

In 1572 Adam von Dietrichstein bought the Maidenburg, as well as the neighboring castle Waisenstein . His son Sigismund rebuilt the Maidenburg.

During the Thirty Years' War the castle was occupied by Swedish troops who, after the victorious battle of Jankau, ruled the area as far as Vienna. When the Swedish occupation withdrew, the castle was looted and burned.

Current condition
