Maihueniopsis colorea is a species of plant in the genus Maihueniopsis from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet colorea means '(Latin coloreus) colored'.

description

Maihueniopsis colorea forms large, slightly arched clusters. The slightly conical, non-humped shoot sections are up to 7 centimeters long and have a diameter of up to 2.5 centimeters. The large protruding areoles are present far down on the shoot sections. Tuft-shaped, brownish-yellow glochids are only formed on the lower areoles. The one to four upright to protruding, strong straight, white central spines have a red-brown tip and are up to 5 centimeters long. The one to four thin, coiled, white radial spines are 5 to 10 millimeters long.

Nothing is known about the flowers . The fruits are covered along their upper edge with glochids and up to 2 centimeters long thin thorns.

Distribution and systematics

Maihueniopsis colorea is widespread in the Chilean region of Atacama, northeast of the city of Copiapó .

It was first described as Tephrocactus coloreus in 1963 by Friedrich Ritter . In 1980 he placed the species in the genus Maihueniopsis . A synonym is Opuntia colorea (F.Ritter) DRHunt (1997).

Maihueniopsis colorea is not well known.
