Maihueniopsis grandiflora is a species of plant in the genus Maihueniopsis from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet grandiflora means '(lat. Grandiflorus) large-flowered'.
description
Maihueniopsis grandiflora forms large cushions of up to 50 centimeters in height and 2 meters in diameter. The large, narrowly elongated to ovate, non-humped shoot sections are bluish gray-green and taper to a point. They are 6 to 9 inches long and 2 to 2.5 inches in diameter. Thorns arise only from the large, somewhat white felted, sunken areoles in the upper part of the shoot sections . The one to six unequal, strongly needle-like, spreading central spines are up to 8 centimeters long. The one or two recurved radial spines have a length of up to 1 centimeter.
The golden yellow flowers are up to 8.5 centimeters long. Your pericarpel is covered with thorns on the upper edge.
Distribution and systematics
Maihueniopsis grandiflora is common in the Chilean region of Coquimbo .
It was first described in 1980 by Friedrich Ritter . A synonym is Opuntia llanos-de-Huanta D.R.Hunt (1997).
