Maillon Rapide

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Maillon Rapide (French: quick chain link) is a connecting piece for chains that is also used in climbing. It is also called mayo . This comes from the English pronunciation of the French word maillon . In the German-speaking world, the Maillon Rapide is often referred to as a screw chain link or a quick link.

Other common names are chain connectors , chain screw connections or chain emergency links . Chain emergency links are also available in the form of a bent chain link. Kettbiner are fire brigade carabiners with a screw lock that are very similar to a chain screw lock .

Applications

Climb

With a Bühler hook , the rope can be
threaded through directly.
The rope would be severely injured if it were threaded directly through the bolt plate of an express anchor and loaded.

If you climb ahead and then (due to accidents, too high a route difficulty, unexpected weather changes etc.) you have no other option but to abseil down , you have to occasionally use a carabiner or, as a cheaper alternative, a Maillon Rapide and leave it behind . The Maillon then is applied when only hook with ear plate (usually express bolts ) and no objects or pitons with ring exist. With the adhesive hooks and stands, the rope can be threaded through the rings without damaging it when abseiling or afterwards when pulling it through. With hooks that have an eye plate, the rope can be damaged by the edges of the eye plate. A Maillon Rapide is used here and left behind.

Paragliding

For paragliders , Maillon Rapides are used at the transition between the risers and the lines to the canopy. Normally, delta-shaped maillons are used and the lines are secured with rubber to prevent them from slipping. They are also used to establish a connection between the reserve parachute and the harness. A comparatively high breaking load strength is required here due to a possible burst of unfolding.

Event technology

Quick connector in a steel cable thimble

Quick links are used to connect chains or steel cables . In event technology, they are used as a means of connecting safety ropes (safety ropes , English Safetys ). There they are subject to special legal regulations ( BGV -C1 § 9, BGI  810-3). The manufacturer's load capacity information is only valid when closed and in a longitudinal direction. Bending loads on the lanyard are to be avoided.
